Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ: Headliner

I'm new to skydiving, can I jump by myself?

Yes - to jump by yourself you will need to take part in the RAPS training course.  This is a full days training and will give you the knowledge and skills necessary to make a solo parachute descent.  Weather permitting, you will do you first solo static-line jump the same weekend of your training.

Are any discounts available for first-time jumpers?

DUSC have a positive relationship with Skydive Strathallan and are proud to offer a £40 discount to any DUSC member wishing to take part in a solo or tandem jump.  In order to receive this discount your jump needs to be booked through our sports club.

Is it scary?

Of course - the thought of throwing yourself out of a perfectly good aeroplane is enough to give anyone butterflies!  It is, however, an amazing and exhilarating experience and the thrill you will receive from each jump is somewhat indescribable.

Is it safe?

Skydiving is an extreme sport and parachuting is potentially a very dangerous activity. With the modern equipment used today, the intensive training and the strict safety rules that we follow, parachuting is made as safe as possible.

What's the RAPS course?

Ram Air Progression System (RAPS) is a course which trains students to become qualified skydivers.  At a steady pace, and a minimum of 19 jumps, you will develop your parachuting ability from leaving the aircraft to doing 360 degree turns in freefall!

Will the weather impact my ability to jump?

Unfortunately, yes; you will not be able to jump during adverse weather conditions.  While we hope for blue skies every time we visit the airfield, if the weather is not suitable you may not be able to jump that day.

Can I use my GoPro on my first jump?

Unfortunately, no; the British Parachute Association (BPA) is the governing body for parachuting in Britain and does not allow unqualified skydivers with less than 200 jumps to wear camera equipment.

After my first jump, can I learn how to pack?

Before progressing onto freefall, all students are taught how to pack student parachute kit and are required to sit a Parachute Packing test.  The club will support you with this.  You can also earn £5 back for each student kit you pack at the dropzone - a great way to make extra cash while waiting to jump!

Is there an age restriction?

Yes, the minimum age for jumping in Britain is 16 years old and the maximum age for a tandem or static line course is 49 years old.

Is there a weight restriction?

Yes, the maximum weight for anyone doing their first jump is 196 libs /14 stone / 89kg.  The maximum weight is inclusive of your clothing and you will be weighed before you jump.

How do I book a solo or tandem jump?

Simply contact us at online or at skydiving@dundee.ac.uk and we will be in touch.  Please also let us know if you are not on our mailing list, as we periodically send out available training dates to our members.

Is a deposit required for securing my place?

A non-returnable deposit of £50 is required to secure your booking on a static line course or tandem jump. The remainder of the cost can be paid on the day before you train/jump.

Do you provide transport to the airfield?

For most weekends, club members are encouraged to share lifts to save on transport costs.  The club does have access to a minibus for busier weekends.  Please post in the Facebook group if you require a lift any particular weekend!

Can we stay overnight at the airfield?

You are welcome to camp at the airfield in a tent (you should contact the airfield and check this is OK in advance) or bring a sleeping bag.  An indoor space is often allocated for those with sleeping bags wishing to stay overnight.  A modern shower block is available so you are funky fresh in the mornin'.

What should I bring to the airfield?

You should bring warm clothes, cash for the canteen, cash/card to pay the balance of your training/jump cost, decent shoes, and something to pass the time.  If staying over bring a sleeping bag and a towel/ toiletries if using the showers.

Does this club have socials?

We hope to start weekly socials for DUSC students when the new semester starts in September.  We believe there is more to skydiving than just the parachuting itself, and we hope you will have a chance to meet lots of new and exciting people!
